Gray Lake and Gray Owl Paint

from The Lettered Cottage of The Lettered Cottage on May 24, 2013
Did I say we were leaving for Minnesota yesterday? I meant today! Slight change in plans, back we’re all set to leave this morning now. Yippeeeeee! PS- That’s the view of our Gray Lake paint (in the sunroom, on the left) and our Gray Owl paint (lightened by 50% in the kitchen, on the right) from our back door…which I’m walking out through as soon as I shut off this comput Read Full Article »

Black and Tan and Tuxedo

from The Lettered Cottage of The Lettered Cottage on May 23, 2013
We’re headed to St. Louis today. That’s about the halfway point to where we’re going in Minnesota. I’m hoping our pets don’t give our house-sitters too much trouble while we’re gone. Something tells me everything will be just fine though. PS- Know any must-stop-for flea markets between southern Alabama and St. Louis? Sure would be fun to stretch our legs in Read Full Article »

Cottage Style Stuff

from The Lettered Cottage of The Lettered Cottage on May 22, 2013
It’s been a shuffle-y couple of months around here, but now that the wall paint is dry, we’ve started putting things back into place. There’s still a fireplace to paint (Simply White), and tile to (temporarily) cover up… …but things are definitely starting to feel more like us around here. I’ve had the shelf above (and below) for so long…but I never cou Read Full Article »

Cottage Style

from The Lettered Cottage of The Lettered Cottage on May 20, 2013
I got an email from a gal named Traci recently, and I thought I’d make a blog post out of it since cottage style is one of my favorite things to talk about. She said it was okay for me to share it here today, so here’s what her email said: Dearest Layla, I love the way you mix the old with the new and make it look crisp.I, too, have just moved into a new house this past Fall, and am t Read Full Article »

Painting The Pantry

from The Lettered Cottage of The Lettered Cottage on May 17, 2013
I noticed something serendipitous while the paint was going up on the walls in the pantry yesterday. Do you see it there, too? That’s our (50% lightened) Gray Owl paint on the wall space between each shelf, but it almost has a “paint strip” effect because of the different light and shadows in there, doesn’t it? So fun! Ooh- and speaking of paint strips, some readers were Read Full Article »

Living Room Update ? Gray Owl Paint

from The Lettered Cottage of The Lettered Cottage on May 15, 2013
A reader named Sarah left me a comment the other day asking about how things were lookin’ in our living room. She reminded me that the only photo I had ever shown of it was this one that we took right before we moved in: She asked if we could “pretty please show a now photo”. Well, it’s far from finished but, Sarah, this one’s for you! I just snapped it about 30 min Read Full Article »

Country Kitchen Island

from The Lettered Cottage of The Lettered Cottage on May 13, 2013
My friend, Lucy, helped us find these old wood corbels earlier this year, and we’re so excited to use them on our soon-to-be country kitchen island: Right now, the island doesn’t reflect our personalities at all, so we’re going to have fun giving it a farmhouse/cottage-style makeover over the next couple of months. The new bar top will stick out a little further than the existi Read Full Article »

Thanks to a cold-that-won’t-quit, I’m still kickin’ it on the couch. It has been sort of fun just (new) neighborhood watching out the window though. Yesterday, this pretty little bird kept me entertained, just as the sun was starting to set… It sat there for soooo long.I started to wonder if it was going to lay an egg- ha! Keith?s Fireplace Makeover ? Part One

from The Lettered Cottage of The Lettered Cottage on May 06, 2013
Kevin and I have both been under the weather this past week/weekend, but before the crud really knocked us out, we had a chance to do a little work on Keith the Fireman’s fireplace. First Kevin and Keith removed the old mantle and tile… Scoring with a utility knife, and a couple of hammers did the trick, lickety split! We had planned to go back over to Keith’s this past Thursda Read Full Article »

Remember that wooden orchard ladder we had propped against the wall in the reading room in our old house? And remember that black wire basket we used in my Mom’sguest bedroommakeover a while back? Well, my Mom gave me the basket at one point or another (we’re both chronic switcher-uppers, ha!), and there’s this little chunk of wall behind the half bathroom door here in our new Read Full Article »

Two-Story Blue

from The Lettered Cottage of The Lettered Cottage on April 19, 2013
My name is Layla Palmer and I love cottages. This is the story of the one that got away… One day, back in 2005, Kevin was doing some work out in the country, right here in sweet home Alabama. While he was out and about, he discovered a quaint rural neighborhood, chock full of colorful cottages, nestled around two small lakes. Later that same day, he came home and said, “Get in the car! Southern Accents ? Barn Wood and a Baby

from The Lettered Cottage of The Lettered Cottage on April 17, 2013
I got to squeeze one of my besties yesterday: That there is Myra in the middle, and her newest addition, Cameron, on the right. Don’t they have the absolutesweetest eyes?! Their personalities are just the same- sweet, sweet, SWEET! Unfortunately it seems to only happen a couple of times a year, but I always love getting to see Myra in person. She’s one of these people that just makes Read Full Article »
